Graduates' second-major departments included: Spanish (the most popular), Italian, Japanese, Russian, SLHS, and Anthropology. Minor departments included Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Italian, Russian, International Affairs, Political Science, Geography, Environmental Design and Atmospheric &amp; Oceanic Sciences. Eight Linguistics&nbsp;majors&nbsp;graduated with Distinction, obtaining at least a 3.75 cumulative GPA for coursework at CU. Three Linguistics&nbsp;MA graduates wrote MA theses and nine&nbsp;graduated with an interdisciplinary certificate鈥攊n Cognitive Science, Culture, Language and Social Practice or Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages. Rachel became passionate about linguistics after doing a research project on psycholinguistics in the 6th grade. She is writing an autoethnography about her family and the Chicano movement and beginning research on regional rap phonotactics. Rachel hopes to pursue a PhD in sociolinguistics after completing the BAM curriculum. When she鈥檚 not taking care of her puppy, Mavis, she loves to sing and even performed at 鈥淧rime鈥檚 Got Talent鈥 here on campus.<p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Wed, 01 May 2024 16:16:42 +0000 Anonymous 2656 at /linguistics Pui Fong Kan (SLHS), Eliana Colunga (PSYC), and Bhuvana Narasimhan (LING) awarded SSCI divisional grant to support undergraduate research in child language /linguistics/2024/04/30/pui-fong-kan-slhs-eliana-colunga-psyc-and-bhuvana-narasimhan-ling-awarded-ssci-divisional <span>Pui Fong Kan (SLHS), Eliana Colunga (PSYC), and Bhuvana Narasimhan (LING) awarded SSCI divisional grant to support undergraduate research in child language</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2024-04-30T14:34:26-06:00" title="Tuesday, April 30, 2024 - 14:34">Tue, 04/30/2024 - 14:34</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/linguistics/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/diversity_in_child_language_acquisition_research.png?h=b3660f0d&amp;itok=9ek7J1RT" width="1200" height="800" alt="diversity in child language acquisition research"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/linguistics/taxonomy/term/20"> News </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/linguistics/taxonomy/term/6" hreflang="en">News</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default 3"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p>The researchers, from three different CU departments, will launch a new interdisciplinary training program "Diversity in Child Language Acquisition Research". The overarching aim is to design and pilot-test a technology-driven system, ENGAGE, that will help to identify and reduce the use of stigmatizing language among home healthcare nurses. As part of the project, the team will be collaborating with two large providers of home healthcare services in the US to collect and analyze millions of nursing notes. Natural language processing techniques will then be implemented to automatically detect and flag stigmatizing language in the clinical notes, and provide feedback to the nurses to improve written language referring to patients.</p><p>Research of this sort has already proven hugely valuable in other healthcare settings, where stigmatizing language has been shown to negatively affect patient outcomes on a range of fronts, and where efforts to shift such language practices have resulted in demonstrable improvements on these same fronts. The team is thus excited to push into the context of home healthcare, specifically, to see what improvements might be made in that arena.</p><p><em>Congratulations, Prof. Raymond and team! </em></p><p> </p><div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/linguistics/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/article-image/cwr_for_grant_announcement.png?itok=SKPNxYWN" width="750" height="1075" alt="chase w r"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Wed, 15 Nov 2023 17:05:55 +0000 Anonymous 2570 at /linguistics CU Linguistics engages new students at Fall 2023 A&S College Day Welcome Fair /linguistics/2023/08/29/cu-linguistics-engages-new-students-fall-2023-college-day-welcome-fair <span>CU Linguistics engages new students at Fall 2023 A&amp;S College Day Welcome Fair</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2023-08-29T13:28:28-06:00" title="Tuesday, August 29, 2023 - 13:28">Tue, 08/29/2023 - 13:28</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/linguistics/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/a_and_s_welcome_fair_fall_2023.jpg?h=05ee7ac3&amp;itok=fqkXqH_E" width="1200" height="800" alt="rain, jake and jamie at welcome fair"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/linguistics/taxonomy/term/20"> News </a> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/linguistics/taxonomy/term/6" hreflang="en">News</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default 3"> <div class="ucb-article-text" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p>Undergraduates Rain Michael, Jaimie Jettmar, and Jacob Burton (from right to middle in photo) joined faculty members Kira Hall and Kris Stenzel at last week鈥檚 A&amp;S College Day Welcome Fair to talk with incoming students about choosing linguistics as a major or minor.
