The CU Department of Linguistics is pleased that Dr. Ambrocio Gutiérrez LorenzoÌýwill join our faculty in Fall 2021 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Gutiérrez LorenzoÌýearned his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in 2021, havingÌýearned his MA in 2014 at theÌýCentro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS), Mexico.ÌýHe is a documentary and descriptive linguist whose research focuses on the syntax and semantics of the Zapotec (Otomanguean) languages of southern Mexico. He has also worked on adjacent areas of phonology and morphology and has broad interests across all the linguistic subfields, including especially discourse analysis and historical linguistics.

He promotesÌýwork on indigenous languages by nativeÌýspeakers and members of heritage communities. He himself is a native speaker of Teotitlán del Valle Zapotec and he has collaborated with other Zapotec and non-Zapotec colleagues to develop academic and revitalization materials.Ìý

In Fall 2021 he will teach LING 3320, American Indigenous Languages. Dr. Gutiérrez Lorenzo's research and teaching activitiesÌýwill further enhance and expand research programs ongoing in the Department that target indigenous languages of the Americas and developÌýlanguage-teaching and archival toolsÌýwith an eye toward promoting community sovereignty and decision making.Ìý
