New Paper! Expanding on expansus

Another new paper by the Johnson laboratory! 鈥淓xpanding on expansus: A new species of Scaphanocephalus from North America and the Caribbean based on molecular and morphological data鈥 co-authored by several members of our laboratory describes the identification and characterization of a new species within the genus of Scaphanocephalus. Scaphanocephalus, a trematode parasite, causes what is known as Black Spot Syndrome on tropical fish, which presents itself as black, circular cysts on the surface of several different fish species.
This study highlights how subtle morphological differences can play a big role in identifying a species within a genus and how important using advanced genetic techniques is in the field of parasitology!
